Public can comment on draft revised informal trading plan for Kraaifontein

19 November 2021

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Management Directorate is inviting the public to comment on the proposed draft revised informal trading plan for Kraaifontein. This follows the public meeting that was held on 17 November 2021 in the area. The comment period ends on Thursday, 16 December 2021.

A public participation process has been initiated to give the community an opportunity to comment on the proposals for the informal trading plan in the Kraaifontein area.

Changes in trading dynamics have triggered the need to review the current informal trading plan in order to address some of the challenges and to create an enabling, supportive and well managed trading environment for all users of this public space.

The proposed changes will, among other things, provide bigger trading bays and most importantly, enhance the ability of traders to adhere to the Covid-19 safety regulations.

The City of Cape Town recognises the significance of informal traders and their contribution to the economy and poverty reduction. The draft revised informal trading plan helps with the creation of employment opportunities that in turn contribute to the household income. The effect of the trading plan is to provide dedicated informal trading opportunities and security of tenure for informal traders in the area.

The City, through this public participation process, wants to put forward the best possible plan with input from the whole community for a sustainable and vibrant informal sector to create an environment that is conducive to the growth of businesses and the economy. It should also encourage cooperative partnerships and engagements to pull together collective resources to enhance the informal economic sector.
